UNITED STATES- Joe Hiller

Mi nombre es Joe Hiller. Tengo 20 años y soy estudiante de Estudios de Genero, Mujeres y Sexualidad en Grinnell College en Iowa, EEUU. Crecí en un pueblito en Pennsylvania, EEUU, pero afortunadamente he tenido la oportunidad viajar y así encontrar a una diversidad de gente y exponerme a varias perspectivas globales. Por ejemplo, con una beca generosa de una organización no lucrativa, el verano pasado completé un Proyecto de Paz en Camboya sobre acceso democrático al sistema de educación. Este tipo de proyecto me ha influido mucho y me formó en el activista que ahora trato de ser.

La verdad es que me apasiona la lucha por la justicia social-quiero trabajar para subvertir mi privilegio como ciudadano de los EEUU para combatir las varias formas de violencia que perpetúa el sistema hegemónica que nos rodea, pero lo cual no nos puede silenciar. Estoy especialmente comprometido a la filosofía de no-violencia y a los esfuerzos colaborativos para construir coaliciones internacionales para seguir la paz significativa.

My name is Joe Hiller. I'm a 20-year-old Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies major at Grinnell College in Iowa. I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania but I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to travel and engage with a great diversity of people and points of view. For example, thanks to a generous grant from the nonprofit Kathryn Wasserman Davis Foundation, I spent this past summer in Cambodia, completing a Project for Peace focused on democratizing access to the educational system. This type of project has deeply influenced me and shaped me into the activist that I now try to be.

I am deeply committed to the struggle for social justice-I want to work to subvert my privilege as a citizen of the US to combat the various forms of violence that are perpetuated by the hegemonic system that surrounds, but cannot silence, us. I am especially committed to the philosophy of nonviolence and to efforts to build international coalitions to pursue meaningful peace.

ESTADOS UNIDOS - Gabriela Uassouf

Mi nombre es Gabriela Uassouf, nací en Buenos Aires, Argentina, y viví casi toda mi vida en el barrio capitalino de Flores. Mis orígenes son diversos: Rusia y Polonia del lado de mi madre, Siria y Líbano de parte de mi padre. Terminé mis estudios secundarios en 2005 y desde entonces concurro a Dickinson College, una universidad en Pennsylvania, Estados Unidos.

La crisis que explotó en Argentina en Diciembre de 2001 propició las condiciones para el surgimiento de nuevos movimientos sociales. Comencé mi actividad política en una red de grupos - centros culturales, proyectos educativos, comedores, cooperativas - surgida en ese contexto: Proyecto Bajo Flores. A mis compañer@s de Flores les debo enseñanzas que me abrieron los ojos enormemente. Desde entonces, me he mantenido activa a través de la organización de Estudiantes por la Acción Social en Dickinson College, articulando nuestras actividades en el campus con otras luchas nacionales como la de School of the Americas Watch.

My name is Gabriela Uassouf. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I lived most of my life in a neighborhood in the capital city called Flores. My ancestry is quite diverse: Russia and Poland on my mother's side, Syrian and Lebanese on my father's side. I finished high-school in 2005 and since then I study at Dickinson College, in PA, U.S.

The crisis that exploded in Argentina in December 2001 set the conditions for new social movements to emerge. I started my political activity in a network of groups - cultural centers, alternative educational projects, dining halls, cooperatives - that grew after the crisis: Proyecto Bajo Flores. I have learned enormously eye-opening lessons from my compañer@s in Flores. Since then, I have stayed active through Students for Social Action at Dickinson, connecting our struggle on camps with other nation-wide movements such as School of the Americas Watch.

HONDURAS- Víctor Alejandro Ramírez Benítez

Hola a todos y todas, mi nombre es Víctor Alejandro Ramírez Benítez, tengo 21 años y nací en Comayagüela Honduras, ahora estudio la carrera de Historia en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras llevo 2 años de carrera , me apasiona la lectura y la historia(esto es un poco obvio).

Jimena y yo somos parte de la red de Jóvenes del distrito Central, y esta es parte del proyecto de prevención de violencia de los jóvenes, que esta presente en México, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua y Honduras, aquí nos formamos como promotores de derechos de los jóvenes, y reproducimos hacia distintas comunidades con riesgo de violencia y abuso de autoridades, también fomentamos la organización juvenil y la lucha contra el estigma social contra los jóvenes. Pero la formación mas grande fue la recibida en la lucha de nuestro pueblo y de la juventud frente al golpe de estado, que hasta hoy sigue sufriendo con los tentáculos de los golpistas, el movimiento juvenil en Honduras revivió y hoy es un Frente de lucha no solo para los hondureños si no también para toda la juventud latinoamericana, así que sean bienvenidos todos y todas.

Personalmente me encanta la música, soy rebelde en muchos aspectos y me encanta las platicas de religión, política y música (esto hace notar que me gusta mucho la polémica y las conversaciones encontradas), me gusta bailar, y bueno espero que sea una experiencia muy divertida y de mucha formación.

Hello friends, my name is Victor Alejandro Ramirez Benitez, I'm 21 years old and was born in Comayagüela Honduras. Currently, I'm in my second year studying history at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma in Honduras. I love history and I love to read.

Jimena and I are part of a group of young people in the central district, and this is part of the project of prevention of violence among the youths which is present in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras. Within this group we develop promoters for the rights of youths and reach out to many different communities with the risk of violence, and abuse from the authorities. Also, we created a youth organization in order to fight against the social stigma placed on youths today. However, the most extraordinary formation we received, was the struggle of our country along with our youths against a coup d'état that until this day we continue to suffer the tentacles of those favoring the coup. The youth movement in Honduras has awaken and today it's a front of fight not only for the Honduran people, but for youths all across Latin America, so welcome friends.

Personally I love music, I am rebellious in many ways and I enjoy conversations concerning politics, religion and music. I love to dance and I hope that this will be not only a fun experience but a transforming one too.

VENEZUELA- Maia Rodriguez

Mi nombre es Maia Rodríguez, tengo 22 años. Nací en Cochabamba, Bolivia donde mis padres estaban trabajando como Misioneros de Maryknoll. Nos fuimos a Venezuela donde me criaron hasta que me fui a Earlham College una Universidad Quaker en Indiana. Ahí estudie Psicología, y al graduarme aplique para el programa de voluntarios Jesuitas (Jesuit Volunteer Corps). Me mandaron a Chicago para trabajar como Organizadora de Comunidades Latinas y vivir en comunidad y en simplicidad con 5 nuevos compañeros.

Durante mi primaria en Venezuela mis recuerdos mas viejos pero impactante era cuando los jóvenes estudiantes, estaban siendo golpeados y torturados por los militares y policías, de ahí en adelante fui comprendiendo lo que estaba pasando no solo en mi país, sino en America Latina. A la misma vez mis estudios en Earlham, una Universidad que valora los movimientos no violentos me ha hecho entender mas la sociedad en la cual vivimos hoy en día, como nos afecta negativamente y como podemos sobrepasar eso en forma pacifica.

Me fascina bailar, "echar broma", tocar música tradicional de Venezuela, leer, comer arepas, hablar sobre la situacion politica en las Americas y el Medio Oriente.

My name is Maia Rodriguez, I am 22 years old and was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia where my parents were working as Maryknoll Lay Missioner. We went to Venezuela where I was raised until I went to Earlham College, a small Quaker school in Indiana. There I studied Psychology, and after graduating I applied to be a Jesuit Volunteer. They placed me in Chicago working as a Community Organizer for a Latino community and to live in a community, in simplicity and working for social justice.

During my childhood in Venezuela, my earliest but most marking memory was when young university students were being attacked and tortured by the military and police forces. From then on I began to understand what was going on not only in my country but in Latin America. At Earlham College, a school that values non-violent movements taught me about the negative effect that society has on us, but how we can overcome it in a peaceful way.

I love to dance, play traditional music from Venezuela, read, eat "arepas", talk about the political situation in the Americas and the Middle East.

Honduras - Mélida Jimena Paz

Mi nombre es Mélida Jimena Paz, tengo 21 años y nací en Tegucigalpa Honduras. Terminé la secundaria en el 2005, y pues actualmente estoy finalizando mi educación superior, con una licenciatura.

Se podría decir que crecí de cierta manera dedicada las causas sociales, ya que mi mamá trabaja en COFADEH, y pues allí crecimos,. Ya hace aproximadamente 4 o 5 años que surge lo que es proyecto de prevención de violencia, dentro del COFADEH, del cual fui parte., lo que amplio los conocimientos sociales que tenía, y a medida trabajaba en el COFADEH adquiríamos más sobre la realidad.

My name is Melida Jimena Paz, I am 21 years old and I was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. I graduated high school in 2005, and I am currently finishing my university studies.

One could say that I grew up committed to social causes, because my mother worked with COFADEH (Committee of Family Members of Disappeared in Honduras), and I grew up with the organization. About 4 or 5 years ago a project within COFADEH begin with a focus on prevention of violence, and I became involved. This has allowed me to become more involved in this reality.

Estados Unidos-Rose Espinola

Mi nombre es Rose Espinola. Estoy entrando a mi último año de estudio en la Universidad de Pensilvania. Mi carrera es Estudios Latinoamericanos y Latinos. Yo crecí en una afuera de Miami y soy hija de un inmigrante mexicano y una judía-norteamericana. Las experiencias de mis padres y mis antepasados han tenido un impacto profundo en la persona que hoy día soy.

Al llegar la universidad me involucré en MEChA (el Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlán). A través de MEChA empecé a participar en la Campaña para Comida Justa de la Coalición de Trabajadores de Immokalee. Sin embargo, la mayoría de mi experiencia organizando en mi campus ha sido con nuestro grupo activista para derechos laborales. Yo veo mi trabajo en campañas domésticas laborales muy conectado al tema transnacional del imperialismo estadounidense. El año pasado estudié en Cuba y allí tuve la oportunidad de seguir explorando estos temas.

My name is Rose Espinola. Next year I will be a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, where I major in Latin American and Latino Studies. I grew up in a South Florida suburb, and I am the daughter of a Mexican immigrant and of a third-generation Jewish-American. The experiences of my parents and those who came before me have had a profound impact on the person I am today.

Arriving to college, I became involved in MEChA (a Chican@ student organization), and through MEChA I grew active in the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' Campaign for Fair Food. Nevertheless, most of my experience organizing on campus has been with the Student Labor Action Project. I understand my work on domestic labor issues to be deeply connected to the transnational issue of United States imperialism and military intervention. In fall 2009 I studied abroad in Cuba where I was able to further explore these issues.
